4 Tell-Tale Signs You May Need to Change Your Transmission Fluid

One of the log book services that your car will require is transmission fluid change. This type of car service is necessary to remove dirty, contaminated or ineffective transmission fluid and replace it with fresh fluid.

The frequency at which car owners are required to change their transmission fluid is car-specific, so you need to check what your car manufacturer recommends. However, you may need to change your transmission fluid before the manufacturer-recommended time interval or mileage.

With that said, here's a look at some common signs indicating your transmission fluid may be bad and needs to be changed.

1. When your transmission fluid looks worn.

Fresh transmission fluid often has a bright red colour, but as you cover more mileage, you may notice a change in the colour of the fluid. If your transmission fluid starts to look brownish or dark, it may be time to replace it. The change in colour usually happens because the fluid has become dirty or contaminated.

It is, however, important to note that colour isn't always an accurate measure of the condition of transmission fluid, so other warning signs need to be considered to determine whether transmission fluid change is necessary or not.

2. When your transmission system is running too hot.

The coolant flowing through your engine and the transmission fluid in your transmission system both have one thing in common – they both help to prevent overheating. If you notice that your car's transmission is running too hot, it is probably because you are running low on transmission fluid or your transmission fluid is no longer effective at doing its job – cooling the transmission system.

3. When you experience problems shifting gears.

Your transmission system is what allows you to shift gears when you're driving. If you're experiencing problems shifting from one gear to another, it could be because your transmission fluid is failing and needs to be replaced.

4. When the transmission warning light comes on.

Many modern cars feature various warning lights on the dashboard to alert drivers of problems they may not be aware of. If your car's transmission temperature warning light activates, you could be running low on transmission fluid or the old fluid could be bad and needs to be flushed out and replaced.

If you suspect that your car requires fresh transmission fluid, it's best to take it to a car transmission specialist immediately to have the issue checked. Acting promptly can help forfend costly transmission repair down the road. For more information, contact a company like Balyang Motors.

About Me

Dealing with a Faulty Auto

If your car isn't running very well, you may want to take action. When I noticed that my car wasn't running as it should be, I didn't take any action and I soon paid a heavy price. That price was being broken down by the side of the road for a couple of hours until my car could be towed to an auto repair shop. The mechanic who inspected my car gave me plenty of advice about where I had been going wrong and the steps I should take to maintain my motor. I hope my blog helps to keep you on the road.
